Prayer Shawl

A prayer shawl is a cloth that is worn for religious purposes. You can find these in all kinds of styles and colors. There is much tradition in the Jewish community about these cloths; however, I will stay with the scriptural meanings as opposed to the traditions of men.

Old Testament Scriptures

Malachi 4:2

But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

NOTES:

  • The wings spoken of here are the corners of the clothing.
  • Moses also spoke of clothing playing a role in the believer's life.

  • Numbers 15:37-41

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them ; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.

    New Testament Scriptures

    Matthew 6:5-6

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

    NOTES:

  • In this scripture, Yeshua says when you pray, not if you pray.
  • The terms used here, "enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door", refers to something that the Hebrews did back then which was to take their outer garment and cover their heads when they prayed.

  • Matthew 9:20-22

And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Yeshua turned him about, and when he saw her, he said,

Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.

And the woman was made whole from that hour.

    NOTES:

  • The woman which had the issue of blood, was healed by touching Yeshua' clothing.

  • Mark 5:25-34

And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, When she had heard of Yeshua, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. And Yeshua, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said,

    Who touched my clothes?

And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. And he said unto her,

Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

    Luke 8:43-48

And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. And Yeshua said,

    Who touched me?

When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And Yeshua said,

Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.

And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her,

Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

    NOTES:

  • The woman knew that the Garment could heal her.
  • Keep in mind that it was not the clothing that could heal. It was her Faith because it was HIS (YESHUA') clothing. Many other Hebrew men that day wore these clothes but it was Yeshua's garment that had the power.
